The Los Angeles Sparks entered Independence Day weekend still trying to shake off last year’s disappointment. Even after making a headline-grabbing trade for three-time All-Star Kelsey Plum—who is posting an impressive 20.1 points and 5.7 assists per game—the team sits at 5-13, the worst mark in the Western Conference and second-worst in the league.
Looking for an immediate boost, Los Angeles signed second-year guard Julie Vanloo just days after she was waived by the expansion Golden State Valkyries. Vanloo arrives fresh from helping Belgium capture the EuroBasket title, bringing a dose of international momentum to an injury-plagued Sparks backcourt.
Vanloo debuted Thursday against the New York Liberty wearing No. 6—a temporary switch from her customary No. 35 jersey. She later revealed on Instagram that she will revert to her preferred number once a new uniform is ready, signaling a return to the digits she wore with both Washington and Golden State, as well as with Team Belgium.
Her next opportunity should come Saturday when the Sparks host the Indiana Fever. Indiana will again be without reigning Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark, sidelined for a fourth straight game by a groin strain despite completing light shooting drills on Friday. Even without Clark, the Fever have remained competitive, presenting a stiff challenge for a Sparks squad still searching for consistency.
Los Angeles hopes the combination of Plum’s scoring punch and Vanloo’s playmaking spark can jump-start a turnaround before the season slips away. Saturday’s matchup will provide an early glimpse of whether this latest roster move can help the Sparks climb out of the West’s cellar.
